The transition rate of our international students to university or college programs is one of the highest in British Columbia. Our international students are routinely accepted into colleges and universities across Canada and the United States, as well as back home. In 2006, all of our international graduates were accepted into post-secondary programs, including the University of British Columbia, York University, the University of Iowa, and the University of Victoria.
Over the past five years, Gulf Island Secondary School graduates have earned some of the best academic results in the province on the mandatory government examinations. In addition, the grade point average of our graduating students is well beyond the GPA of other students in British Columbia. In 2006, our students earned more than double the average number of provincial scholarships that are offered annually to the top academic students in the province.
In 2004 the Gulf Islands School District 64 adopted an innovative four day schedule that resulted in the students and teachers spending more time in the classroom for four days of the week. A fifth day of supplementary academic studies is a requirement for all international students who are enrolled in a Graduation Program. It is optional for all other international students. Please click Weekly Schedule for more information and an example of a weekly schedule.

This immersion approach to scheduling has increased student results on provincial assessments. The Gulf Islands students earn marks well beyond the provincial average on all government exams.
The four day schedule has an added benefit for our international students, who are required to attend a mandatory Friday program. This fifth-day program includes an English 10, 11 and 12 support program, additional seminar support for ESL students, Math tutoring, homework assistance, and the option of taking the provincially mandated Planning 10 credit course outside the regular timetable.
