SPECIALTY STUDY PROGRAMS

The International students who are enrolled in the Gulf Islands International Program at Gulf Islands Secondary School have the option of applying for three Specialty Study Programs that are available to the students of Gulf Islands Secondary School.

The Gulf Islands School of Performing Arts (GISPA) attracts talented students who wish to develop their exceptional acting, dancing and musical skills. The program assists students in acquiring the skills, knowledge and attitudes that will propel them through their artistic lives. Mentorship is an important component in the development of artistic excellence. As a regular feature of the program, GISPA will arrange master classes, workshops and tutorials with nationally and internationally renowned performers. Fees for the Gulf Islands School of Performing Arts are $1,500 annually.

The Saturna Ecological Education Centre (SEEC) is located on beautiful Saturna Island. Students enrolled in the Gulf Islands International Program are required to pay an additional fee of $1,000 to participate in this one semester program. Students travel to Saturna Island every Monday morning on the school water taxi and return to Salt Spring Island late Wednesday afternoon. During their time on Saturna Island, where they stay with local families and participate in an integrated program of English 11, Biology 11 or Geography 12, Teaching and Learning 11, and Community Connections 11. During the rest of the school week they can pursue elective interests or directed studies at Gulf Islands Secondary or participate in the school’s work experience program.

The Advanced Placement Studio Art Program is available at a small cost of $250 to aspiring artists who are interested in creating a portfolio for post-secondary credit. The AP Studio Art portfolios are designed for students who are seriously interested in the practical experience of art. AP Studio Art is not based on a written examination; instead, students submit portfolios for evaluation at the end of the school year.

Gulf Islands Secondary School also offers a wide variety of elective programs in the trades, the media, performing and visual arts, as well as Leadership, Peer Tutoring, and Peer Counselling. There are no extra fees for these programs.
