SUPPLEMENTARY ACTIVITIES
and outside District Travel

The Gulf Islands International Education Program strongly believes that student involvement and participation in supplementary activities promotes a sense of individual and community well-being. Unlike many international programs, the Gulf Islands International Education Program offers a small number of supplementary programs free of charge, while others are partially subsidized.
Programs offered that are free of charge or partially subsidized include a Leadership and Team Building Day at Ruckle Park, at least one ski trip, a bike riding trip around Stanley Park in Vancouver, Christmas Shopping Day in Victoria, and a skating trip on Vancouver Island. We also offer free English Enrichment, Math and Science tutoring most Fridays. Other supplementary activities such as the kayaking or surfing adventures are not directly subsidized.

Please note that all students and their parents are required to sign waiver forms if they wish to participate in any program sponsored activities. Without signed waivers, international students will not be permitted to participate in any of these activities.

Saltspring Island is rich with supplementary activities, including community sports, like soccer, golf, and tennis; recreational programs, such as archery, yoga, fitness, and the martial arts; performing arts programs, including dance, drama and choir; and leadership programs like the Boy Scouts and Girl Guides, Air Cadets, the 4-H Club and local community service for youth organizations.

The Gulf Islands International Program’s Participation Agreement states: “Students are not permitted to go on unsupervised trips by themselves. If permission from the natural parents (click here for the Permission Form) and an approved formal travel plan (click here for the Travel Plan) are submitted at least three weeks beforehand, international students might be permitted to travel outside of the School District on their own.

Please note that the end of the school year is June 30th. The Gulf Islands International Program will not be responsible for any of our international students beyond that date. Students will be responsible for making their own homestay arrangements and transportation plans should they choose to stay longer than the official end of the school year. We will, however, help students extend their medical insurance so that they have adequate coverage until they go home.
